Originally from Northern India, the ever-cooling, aromatic thandai is one of India’s most beloved beverages!
As the name suggests, thandai comes from the Hindi word, “thanda” which means “cool”. It’s an energizing and refreshing, milk-based beverage associated with, and often consumed during the time of the Holi festivals, and especially during the scorching summer heat.
In India, there are many recipes for making thandai, but one thing is for sure: It’s going to be prepared with some exotic ingredients that may include such delicacies such as rose petals and rose water, cream, mango puree, watermelon seeds, fragrant spices like saffron, cardamom and black pepper, and various nuts and seeds including white poppy seeds that are so common to India. There are numerous variations of thandai but the most common are “badam thandai” made with almonds and “bhang thandai” made with cannabis.
While white poppy seeds are readily available in India, they are less common in Western countries. Our organic thandai mix contains dark poppy seeds. Rest assured they are just as nutritious and delicious and will add just the right poppy-touch to your thandai. All poppy seeds – white or dark – are always interchangeable.
Legend has it that thandai it was Lord Shiva’s favorite thing to drink. And who can blame him? It’s so outrageously delicious that just one sip can conjure feelings of sheer delight and gratitude!
